nagasaki day... a day to comtemplate the NUCLEAR lessons with North Korean threats in mind

in #news7 years ago

**Today marks the 72nd remembrence of the bombing of Nagasaki at the end of WWII**

On this day the United States dropped their second Nuclear bomb on the city of Nagasaki after doing the same 3 days before on Hiroshima. Those bombings marked the end of the participation of Japan in the war but also led the world into the arms race called the Cold War.

Now usually this is not an "important" topic.  And I do not by any means want to belittle what happened back then but the world has lived through the cold war and has since then been doing everything possible to mitigate another nuclear attack.

First it was the threat of mutual annihilation keeping the superpowers from using nukes and the last few years i would say the reason to reduce the stockpile is economic (just costs to much in upkeep and the ability to destroy the earth 20 times or 18 times does not matter) and just common sense...

The superpowers realize there are other ways to cripple a country (cyber warfare) so they tend to choose the choice on the left over the right

And the world population was vaguely aware that those nukes are out there but we did and do not really think about them.  This is what i meant with not important (out of sight, out of mind) but i have the impression this might change.  North Korea is a throwback to the days where you still needed to bluster and bluff on the world stage.  Most countries now are used to diplomacy and a more informed populace.  This is why they have a hard time handling the dictatorship and its despot, they are not used to this kind of behavior anymore

**Here is why we should be paying attention:**

- North Korea is constantly testing new ballistic missiles capable of carrying nuclear warheads (which according to some experts they already have).  The assumption is that they are capable of reaching the USA.

- Kim Jung Un does not seem the most stable of people to me and he does not seem to want to back down, instead he keeps provoking the superpowers where and when he can and does not react to the sanctions imposed on his country

- President Trump anwers to the threat by making one of his own: *"They will be met with fire and the fury like the world has never seen."* This means that Trump has drawn a line in the sand. lets all hope and pray that he does not feel like he needs to cross it.

- All the offers to negotiate by South Korea (and China, even Russia) have been swept off the table by the government in Pyongyang

Hopefully we can all wake up in a world where the nukes that exist are either being destroyed or just gather dust in some well guarded silo
