Paris Hilton tweeted photos of herself with Britney Spears with the caption, "11 years ago today, Me & Britney invented the selfie!" Yes, it's hard to believe, but November 19, 2006 was the first time a human ever took a photograph of itself! I'm just kidding! We have no idea why Paris thinks she invented the selfie!
People on Twitter came to drag her, Tweeting photos this photo of comedian Dave Attell snapping a selfie of himself and a fan with a disposable camera. Even Frank Sinatra took a mirror selfie when he was just a kid.
And it goes back even further.
In 1920, photographer Joseph Byron posed with his friends using an experimental camera and lens allowing the men to snap a photo of themselves. But even that photo is not the first selfie! In 1838, Robert Cornelius created the first selfie, in fact one of the first photographs of a human ever, by posing motionless in front of a very early camera for 10 to 15 minutes.
So, Paris Hilton didn't snap the first selfie ever, but maybe she coined the term 11 years ago?
In 2006, the "selfie" was more commonly called "The Myspace Pic" Named for the mega-popular social media site, MySpace pics were typically taken in a bathroom mirror, or from a high angle, and were also washed out from the bright flash from a digital camera.
The word selfie has been floating around in the world for a while, but gained in popularity after 2010. Selfie became the word of the year in 2013, as smartphones with front-facing cameras gave everyone much better selfie results than ever before.
However, the earliest use of the word "selfie" is an apology. On September 13, 2002, Australian Nathan Hope posted a photo he took of the injuries he sustained to his face during his friend’s 21st birthday party to an Australian science forum. He wrote, "sorry about the focus, it was a selfie.”
That's 4 years before Paris claims to have invented the selfie.
Why did Paris Hilton claim she and Britney invented the selfie? Who knows. What do you think though? Let us know in the comments or on Steemit at
