UK Foreign Sec: Unclear if events mark downfall of Mugabe

in #news7 years ago

UK Foreign Secretary, Boris Johnson, says the UK cannot tell how developments in Zimbabwe will play out in the coming days.

"We do not know whether this marks the downfall of Mugabe or not, and we call for calm and restraint," Johnson said while addressing the UK House of Commons on Wednesday.

The UK Foreign Secretary also criticized Mugabe for rigging elections and his heavy-handed rule.

“All Britain has ever wanted for Zimbabweans is to be able to decide their own future in free and fair elections,” said Johnson.

“Mugabe’s consuming ambition was always to deny them that choice, and this House will remember the brutal litany of his 37 years in office. The elections he rigged and stole, the murder and torture of his opponents, the illegal seizure of land, leading to the worst hyper-inflation in recorded history measured in the billions of percentage points, and forcing the abolition of the Zimbabwean dollar."
