As the big night arrives, the 91st Academy Awards, I bring you my Top 5 of favorite movies nominated to Best Picture at the Oscars.
1. Roma, dir. Alfonso Cuarón
In the first spot, I've got the mexican crown jewel that's been talked by everyone and with reason. Holding ten nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director, Roma is, in my opinion, the most spotless film in the list of of nominees to the big prize. It is a production in black and white, set in the tumultuous time of Mexico 1970's and it tells the story of a middle-class family and their maid, Cleo. The production design and the photography are fantastic aspects of this movie, but it is the touching and deeply personal scriptwhat's the highest point of this Netflix production.
2. Black Panther , dir. Ryan Coogler
At second spot, we've got what I consider the best Marvel film, that tells the story of the superhero of the same name. The eighteenth installment of the extense Marvel Cinematic Universe is positioning itself, to my analysis, to give quite a suprise later tonight. Because, although Roma is superior in every cinematographic aspect, it has a flaw: it might not catch the general public, because it's a bit dense and hard to swallow for regular audiences. It is then that Black Panther comes to rise above Roma, because, like the Netflix film, Black Panther has flawless photography, script, costume and scenary, along with direction and it *does *manage to capture regular movie-goers to entertain them.
3. Bohemian Rhapsody, dir. Dexter Fletcher & Bryan Singer
Here we have another one that I fear might take the big win tonight, something I wouldn't agree with very much, even though I have it on the third place. The biopic about legendary rock band Queen (that's going to play at the ceremony tonight), with a special focus on its lead singer Freddie Mercury, is made to entertain, but cinematography-wise, it's not well-made. Personally, I've enjoyed it much more than any other film in this awards season, but it's lack of good directing and editing makes me feel that it doesn't deserve the golden statue to Best Picture. Rami Malek as Freddie, however, deserves all the good things.
4. Blackkklansman, dir. Spike Lee
In the fourth spot, I've got the comedy, pseudo-satirical, and drama film written and directed by Spike Lee, based on the book Black Klansman by Ron Stallworth, about an african-american FBI agent who infiltrates de racist radical group, the Ku Klux Klan, with the help of a jewish partner. The plot is quite interesting and compelling and the touch of humor is just right, it doesn't use tacky or silly jokes.
5. The Favourite, dir. Yorgos Lanthimos
And at last, we have the historical period black comedy drama film about the relationship between two cousins vying to be court favourites of Queen Anne. But moreso than the plot itself, which is very odd and original, it's the directing decisions that Lanthimos takes what makes this film even more entertaining to watch, the shots and different camera settings are another atraction of the movie.
