Haiti Won Independence in 1804 - But They've Never Been Free

in #news5 years ago

IN HEADLINES: Haiti won independence from France in 1804 - kinda. Almost 150 years later, they were still paying off a debt demanded by France for the loss of slave labor. Fast forward to today and the trappings of imperialism have merely shape shifted. 215 years after independence, Haiti has yet to be free.

OUR INTERVIEW this week: Documentary filmmaker and radio producer Kevin Pina joins us to talk about the current situation in Haiti following the embezzlement of desperately needed funds and the arrest of US mercenaries in Port-au-Prince. There's a rich (literally) history of US involvement, not to mention UN war crimes. To understand Haiti, we have to understand these capitalist and imperialist forces that continue to oppress her.
