Florida strikes again: Woman comes home to find driveway has been stolen

in #news7 months ago

Florida always amazes me. I've been there a few times and it seems at first to be such an exotic and wonderful place but just like an onion, the state has a lot of layers to it. For the people I know that live there, I am told that outside of the beach areas, Florida is basically redneck central with meth dictating a lot of how people run their lives.

Strange crimes are common in the state and "Florida Man" has become an internet sensation and from what I hear, even a TV show now. Pennsylvania occasionally tries to steal the crazy crown from Florida, but they always find a way to strike back and keep that coveted number 1 spot. This week in crazy and dumb crime comes yet again from Florida.

First off let me say what an agonizingly depressing home that is, driveway or not.

Anyway, Amanda Brochu came home to her Orange county home to find that someone had removed her entire driveway. The drive was made of cement so this was no small undertaking like stealing a BBQ grill, there had to have been some level of heavy equipment involved.

Amanda has one of those door cameras and exactly that was caught on film. By the time Amanda got home the entire driveway was gone.

Amanda had recently put up the property for sale and already has a contract on another property elsewhere.

Now here is where I have to do a bit of head scratching and don't think that this is simple theft. A bunch of bashed up concrete and dirt in a truck isn't worth anything. Cement from demo jobs is always just thrown out, it has no value. There is no financial incentive for someone to "steal" a cement driveway.

Amanda had mentioned that contractors had been stopping by to measure the driveway saying that a person who has only been ID'd as "Andre" requested a quote for a replacement drive.

How is it possible that her neighbors didn't see anything? The story I saw about this indicated that a job like this would take around 4 hours and nobody in the area saw anything? Also, most of the door cameras alert your phone when something is going on outside and since this was in the middle of the day did she just sit there, wherever she was, and just WATCH as her driveway was taken away?

Amanda has indicated that she has only 2 weeks to replace the drive at a cost of 10,000 dollars and she doesn't have the funds to cover the cost. I smell an incoming GoFundMe.

I suppose it could also be a bizarre scam perpetuated by some underground paving union where they force people to get new driveways. This is Florida after all, nothing is off the table there.
