Australian Weapons Ban does not Work

in #news8 years ago (edited)

Everybody know in 1996, Australia decided to pass a law where it is almost impossible for a good citizen to hold a regular gun as a system of self-defence.

This law is used, all around the world, as an example by anti-weapon associations or politicians who claim to have a solution to crime and violence.

Today, Australian police forces were forced to admit this law is not effective at all. In fact, this system was very useful to leave 700 thousands Australian without a weapon but completely ineffective against those weapons owned by criminals. So just legal weapons were taken out from the public but not the illegal ones.

In the last 12 months, in Australia around 3.300 people were arrested due to crimes done with a weapon. Around 9.000 illegal weapons were confiscated and the Chief Officer of South Wales, Mr. Andrew Scipione, said:

"There is not any direct link between violence and weapons. A weapon might be in the hand of criminals, riders, killers or normal thieves..."

That mean anybody can hold an illegal weapon but not a legal one. Especially if you are a good, reliable citizen.

What can we say?

Great job to make Australia unsafe!

I don't know where you're from Mate but obviously not Australia 🇦🇺. Any law abiding person can own a gun if they choose to and meet the criteria of storage.

This is what happened in Australia,

"Homicide has decreased by nine percent since 1990 and armed robbery by one-third since 2001, but recorded assaults and sexual assaults have both increased steadily in the past 10 years by over 40 percent and 20 percent respectively."

They have reverted to a "might makes right" society. Notice rape has increased 20 percent? Violent assaults 40 percent? It is THE reason to carry. Protection of yourself and loved ones, the innocent and community. Violent assault, home invasions, strong arm robberies. Compare the rates of these crimes before and after. Now that the innocent has only kitchen utensils to defend with while when criminal is bigger, or in multiples, there is no more deterrent. If they own an illegal gun forget about it... You are dead meat.

I am Australian. I have lived an travelled all over the world and no where else I have felt more safe than Australia. Yes bad stuff still happens but the chances of it are so much lower than most places in the world. The statistics you are quoting does not take into account the increased reporting of assaults during this time. But since I'm a believer in live and let live you believe whatever you want. Good luck to you.

You can see from this graph how dangerous these gun laws have made Australia compared to some other countries. Oh and we actually have more legal guns per head of population than we had before the Port Arthur massacre which lead to the current gun ownership regime.

I am afraid that this graph do not give a right value to this argument. The population of the U.S.A. is bigger than the population of Australia, therefore there is more people and more crimes. If you compared the amount of crimes they were stopped thank to a gun you will see that guns saved more lives than those lost. So place everything in the right perspective instead to be demagogue: you are comparing the rate of shoots of a country with 330 million people with a county of around 33 million people. Nonsense.

The graph is a figure per 100k population so USA having more people is irrelevant.

No, way more people more possibility of crime or death. Less people less problems. It is logic...
