Using Hydroponics To Feed Dairy Cows
According to the Assistant Professor in the Dairy Science Department, Jill Anderson, located at the South Dakota State University, researchers are now looking into whether or not hydroponic feeds are ideal for dairy cows and lactating cows. Specifically, they are looking into the impact of integrating sprouted barley into their diet.
Anderson says that the sprouted barley, that can be grown hydroponically and without soil, offers high yields and the feed provides good value. This research adds to that already in the field which has sought to investigate which types of crops can be hydroponically grown, such as: rye, wheat, oats, sprouts, and more.
Currently, they are carrying-out controlled research studies on two different treatment groups, in co-operation with HydroGreen Global Technologies. Anderson also mentioned some limitations to using a hydroponically grown crop, such as its high water content. And further research in this area is needed in order to determine an optimal level for feeding rates.
Most dairy farmers today are using GMO corn to feed their animals, though a growing number are turning to the grass-fed trend and offering more pasture raised options in the market. But overall the market still heavily relies on corn-related and soybean-related products for feeding.
The researchers involved in the sprouted barley trial were able to conduct a 6 week trial, involving lactating dairy cows, and it focused on their milk production. As well, a 12 week trial of the same sort focused on dairy heifers and it looked at their growth rate over time. Though researchers are still working on analyzing the results, they hypothesize that this hydroponic feed might offer improved health benefits and function.
Preliminary research showed that the lactating cows were able to produce similar amounts of milk even though they were on the hydroponic feed with the sprouted barley. They were also seen to produce milk that contained the same levels of fat and protein content, compared to the control group in the study.

A million times better than feeding them with the animal feed they used to give them at the time of the Mad Cow epidemic!
any thoughts on feeding beer waste ?
