The remains of the aircraft carrier, and its 35 aircraft, have been discovered at 3,000 meters depth in the Coral Sea, off the northeast coast of Australia.

The Lexington was originally designed as a battle cruiser and was launched as an aircraft carrier in 1925.

On March 4 were discovered the remains of the USS Lexington, one of the first US aircraft carriers, sunk by Japanese forces on May 8, 1942, during World War II, with 35 aircraft on board. The remains of the aircraft carrier have been discovered at 3,000 meters depth in the Coral Sea, off the northeast coast of Australia, by the Petrel crew, the research vessel of businessman Paul Allen, the co-founder of Microsoft and a passionate about the Underwater exploration. "The Lexington was on our priority list because it was one of the capital ships that were lost during World War II," says Robert Kraft, the underwater operations director for Paul Allen.
