Sun Erupts, Major Cosmic Web Update
The north coronal is straight on with the Earth facing side of the Sun disc and it is big an obvious. Solar wind stream is picking up and we should see more activity on Earth in relation to it. However, there has been a shift in earthquake production and Ben released a video last night called, Was it all just luck?. In it, he talks about how he was hitting over 80% of earthquake predictions and then all of a sudden, there was a drought of large magnitude earthquakes. Then the signs and tells that he used couldn't do any better than 25% on the smaller quakes. As with everything, the first step is to accept that something is wrong. So, Ben will be looking into what changed and what can be done to predict earthquakes in this new pattern.
The Sun is back to being a bit active today as we head towards the Great American Solar Eclipse on Monday.
- C-Class solar flare released. Luckily, it was 90 degrees to the Earth Facing side, so it is headed towards Saturn. Heads up Casini!
- Mudslide in Sierra Leone has killed hundreds and hundreds still missing.
A coronal hole is a large region in the corona which is less dense and is cooler than its surrounds. Such holes may appear at any time of the solar cycle but they are most common during the declining phase of the cycle. Coronal holes occur when the Sun's magnetic field is open to interplanetary space. ~ http://www.sws.bom.gov.au/Educational/2/1/5
Sunspots are temporary phenomena on the Sun's photosphere that appear as spots darker than the surrounding areas. They are regions of reduced surface temperature caused by concentrations of magnetic field flux that inhibit convection. Sunspots usually appear in pairs of opposite magnetic polarity. Their number varies according to the approximately 11-year solar cycle. ~ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sunspot
The solar wind is a stream of charged particles released from the upper atmosphere of the Sun. This plasma consists of mostly electrons, protons and alpha particles with thermal energies between 1.5 and 10 keV. Embedded within the solar-wind plasma is the interplanetary magnetic field. ~ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solar_wind

Amazing, Thanks!
We are going to be very attentive to the Solar activity the next days as we approach the 21st.
It will be very interesting to see how that group of sunspots is evolving that are probably geo-effective hours before the eclipse.
If the Earth is causing the quiet on the Sun when it faces the Earth, does the level of quiet that it causes change during an eclipse? That is the question. Could we get a CME in the middle of the eclipse?
Very good questions. I think we will have to wait and analyze the data once the eclipse is over. In my opinion by pure statistics if that could occur. Now to say with what probability it would be pure speculation.
