This stuff goes on on both sides. Competing interest groups issue talking pieces (or entire news stories with high production values) that are then parroted by the news media outlet. It's a bad thing.
In my experience news programs are just a form of entertainment--they are produced and edited just like a sitcom or drama. If salient facts are not entertaining, they get cut.
