In Defense of the Infamous Google Memo

in #news7 years ago (edited)

I think private companies should be able to hire and fire whoever they want but their reasoning in this case makes no sense. The memo this guy wrote had nothing to do with being "anti-diversity". He was just pointing out that race/sex based hiring is, well, racist and sexist and not in the best interest of the company.

Social media is currently buzzing over Google software engineer James Damore, who claims he was fired from the company for “perpetuating gender stereotypes.” But if Google really stood for diversity, as it claims, it would not have fired an employee for simply voicing his own opinion.

Exactly! Just hire the best person for the job, whomever they may be. Isn't that best for everyone?

I have not formed an opinion fully on this issue because of lack of information, but I did happen to catch earlier today an interview with James and hearing him speak on himself rather than reading others opinions on him, he is definitely not as negative as he is made out to be:

At this point, I don't see how it was negative at all. Here's the entire text of the memo that got him fired: https://www.documentcloud.org/documents/3914586-Googles-Ideological-Echo-Chamber.html
