Tedx Fiasco in Brussels: Artist Gives Anti-Censorship Talk and is Dragged off Stage

in #news6 years ago

On Friday the 5th of March there was a Tedx event in Brussels called, Brave New World, named after the famous Aldous Huxley book. It's quite sad and ironic that during this event, a female presenter, Deborah De Robertis, was dragged off stage during her talk about censorship.

Reason for Removal

The supposed reason for her removal was that the artist showed the audience explicit images of naked body parts. She had initially agreed with the organizers not to show any explicit images during her talk. The organizers of this specific event took matters into their own hands and forcibly removed her off stage. Do note that the artist was known for pulling stunts like this on stage. Even more ironic is that during the removal, her breasts were also exposed. Possibly one of the worst responses for this kinds of situation, if you ask me...

License Revoked

The official TED organization has since revoked the license of Tedx Brussels. They responded that the forced removal of the artist was deeply inappropriate.

From TED's Blog - Today at TEDxBrussels, an independently organized TEDx event, speaker and performance artist Deborah De Robertis was forcibly removed from the stage by one of the event’s organizers, who objected to the talk’s content," the group notes. "We have reviewed the situation and spoken with the organizer. While we know there are moments when it is difficult to decide how to respond to a situation, this response was deeply inappropriate.

My Thoughts

The organizers of this event fucked up. There are far better ways to deal with a situation like this if it is really necessary. Though, I personally think that if you invite a speaker, who is known for doing unexpected stuff like this (nudity), you should not be censoring it when it does happen. Tedx Brussels has also claimed that they dragged her off because there were children in the audience, to that I say bullshit. The explicit images that were shown, I would describe as artistic nudes and parents should have been aware that this specific artist was known for that.

And damn the irony of it all, they exposed her breasts on stage, while they dragged her off for showing images that contained nudity.

What are your thoughts about this? Let me know in the comments!

TED is hipster shit. They revoked that one guy with his "morphic resonance" spiel, because "not scientific", but push all sort of ideological BS, like some fat chick telling us that we should praise her for being fat.
The last TED talk I enjoyed was by Sam Hyde 🤣
Looks like Deborah De Robertis made a good point.

Yeah you've got some good TED talks, but a lot of them are pretty much pseudo-scientific bullshit. Just shared this because of the irony, not because I'm a fan of TED talks ;-)

That is absolutely crazy but doesn't shock me any longer with all the BS happening in today's society. How sad for all of us.

Yeah, weird or what, and Tedx was supposed to be among the good guys. Then this knee-jerk reaction.
