After China's Industrial Revolution, they were able to take over the world's manufacturing through a combination of cheap labor, plentiful resources, and efficient government control.

China has since lost the edge in labor cost; the growing middle class demands higher wages, which is great for them and China's consumer market, but not for competitive manufacturing. Anyway, I read an article about this bitcoin mining operation in remote Sichuan area that reminded me how China can always find a competitive edge compared to say the USA where the buttheads of state would never let a set up like this happen.

Of course the workers get paid little and live in crappy dormitories, like many I've seen in factories around China. However, most of them are young and in my experience I've seen many rise through the ranks and move from the dormitories when they start families.
