The company also offers various (relatively cheap) plans to increase the VPN speed. However, since the company is operating on a large donated fund, money making isn't their main goal. Furthermore, all traffic is rerouted through Switzerland, the country having the most strict privacy laws in the world!
I have personally tested both of their services and I can recommend using both the e-mail and VPN client. Both can be used for free.
