Is there a federal law that requires you to pay an income tax?
Joseph Bannister was officially sworn in as an IRS Criminal Investigation Division (IRS-CID) Special Agent in November, 1993. After hearing many claims that the IRS was administering and enforcing the federal income tax fraudulently, he personally investigated the matter.
He researched the question in his off duty hours at his own expense for two years beginning in 1997. Although he had begun his research confident that he would find such allegations false, he ultimately became convinced that the average American is not liable for a personal income tax.

Once he reached this conclusion,
Bannister confronted his superiors in the IRS, simply asking them to show him the law that made the ordinary American worker liable. Rather than do that, the IRS showed him the door and later brought criminal charges against him.
He beat those charges; click here for his attorney's story about that trial, at which Bannister was acquitted by a jury of his peers.

yeah, there ought to be an opt-out clause where if you don't want to pay taxes, you get to live on an island with like-minded peers
An island? Like, perhaps, the planet we live on?
I see no point at which any of us "opted" in to begin with.
Or perhaps there are all too many who opted in, and now purport to have some authority to "opt" the rest of us in?
