Change.org Petition Urges Electoral College Members to Vote Against Their State

in #news8 years ago

In a last ditch effort to stop Donald Trump from coming to power on January 20th, 2017 there has been a Change.org petition created and signed by over 4 million people at the time of writing this article. The petition is just 500K signatures short of his 4.5 million signature goal.

Electoral College: Make Hillary Clinton President on December 19

The petition urges Electoral College Electors in 24 states that allow them to vote how they wish regardless of who their state voted for to vote for Clinton and the Electors in other states to face financial fines for voting against their state. Their justification for these Electors to ignore the popular vote in their respective red states would be that Hillary won the popular vote.

Hillary won the popular vote. The only reason Trump "won" is because of the Electoral College. But the Electoral College can actually give the White House to either candidate. So why not use this most undemocratic of our institutions to ensure a democratic result?

If these Electors were to actually vote for Clinton over Trump on Dec 19th it would mark the first time ever that the Electoral College reversed the expected outcome.

So Steemians, what do you think? What would you do if you were an Elector in a red state? Is this just butthurt Clinton supporters attempting to steal the election or is this a legitimate political tactic taking advantage of the same Electoral College system that lost Hillary the election despite winning the popular vote?

I know I'm late to the party but, such a tough question.

Literally part of the reason for the electoral college is in case the populace makes a bad decision.
Hillary won the popular vote.

But...

If the electoral college didn't vote the way the state did it would erode the democracy of the EC
It seems wrong to "change the rules" because your candidate lost.
Some militia groups promised revolution over election rigging... this would simply trigger those people possibly costing people their lives.

Then again... Trump seems dangerous to me. I can't ignore the parallels to Hitler, or the way hate groups like the KKK praise him or how Spencer gave a speech praising him to nazi salutes. Not to mention economists evaluated his economic plans and basically stated it would be terrible.

Not really sure what the EC should do... my half assed, half a bottle of bourbon 3:42am idea is that the EC should split their vote by the percentage in each state. So if a state had 6 electoral votes and voted 50/50 each candidate would get 3 electoral votes. It most closely models the way people actually voted... but not sure who would win in that case even.

There would be serious backlash. Whoever knows what is possible now. I can't wait to see how it all turns out. Sigh.

Soros needs to be banned from planet earth! Let's get a petition going on that!!!

Humanity - the cosmic joke.

Oh, death, please take me away from humanity.

I feel like I've already lived this moment in a previous life...oh, the irony :)

Sounds like the Trump supporters would protest too then... Then I guess we'll have Hillary supporters protesting still. So I guess the whole country will be at protest then.

basically...it's always soros lol. i'm surprised at how shameless he is, considering the amount of outtage he's experienced in the past several months. can't stop won't stop

very worthy argument, and good discussion. But you'd have to not use it as a double standard, or it could be done in the future to the opposite effect.

I think if it were to happen it might be the last electoral college ever.
