Day Zero - Cape Town South Africa
The area of Cape Town South Africa could be facing a Day Zero event in April of 2018!
Cape Town is a major city in South Africa, a seaside metropolis! Well, in only a few short months they will possibly be entering a Day Zero event. What is Day Zero? Their taps will run dry, they will be the world's first major metropolis to run out of water.
People collect water from pipes fed by an underground spring in St. James, a Cape Town suburb.
How did they get into such a dire situation? There are three main factors:
- The area has been undergoing the worst drought in more than a century. Cape Town has less than 10% remaining of its natural drinking water.
- A large spike in the population, currently at 4 million and counting
- Climate change
What's worse? The people don't even seem to care! A statement from the mayor's office says:
"It is quite unbelievable that a majority of people do not seem to care and are sending all of us headlong towards Day Zero, "
"We can no longer ask people to stop wasting water. We must force them."
60% of Capetonians won’t save water and must now be forced. People are being limited to 50 litres per day for the next 150 days in an attempt to prevent this event from occurring. Water management devices are being installed in households to enforce this limitation as months have passed since they began begging the public to abide to limiting water usage. With less than 73 days to go until the water needs to be turned off, the government of the city are planning to take action if the dam should fall below 13%.
"While the city is focusing all its efforts on beating back Day Zero, we need to be prepared for a scenario where we take control of the city’s water supply in order to extend it into the winter months. We will shut off supply to taps when our dams reach a collective level of 13.5 percent,"
Another sign of the sad state the world is in coming towards the end. Droughts, famine and disease have been infesting the news lately, and most people can see how vicious 2018 has been. Unfortunately, the possibility of it getting worse is pretty high. Hopefully the world can repent before it's too late.
