Global Seed Vault Reaches 1 Million Stored Seed Varieties!
Such a great way for a seed bank to celebrate their 10th year anniversary. To make the occasion special, Global Seed Vault received shipments of over 70,000 crop varieties, officially bumping up the number of stored seed varieties to over the 1 million mark.
According to a report by BBC, the total number does not include emergency withdrawals of around 90,000 seeds. These withdrawals were used to make up for seed samples that were stranded in Syria because of the ongoing conflict ensuing there.
A Very Important Seed Bank
Marie Haga, Executive Director of Crop Trust, says this major seed bank plays a crucial role in the preservation of the human race.
The Svalbard Global Seed Vault is an iconic reminder of the remarkable conservation effort that is taking place every day, around the world and around the clock – an effort to conserve the seeds of our food crops.
Safeguarding such a huge range of seeds means scientists will have the best chance of developing nutritious and climate-resilient crops that can ensure future generations don’t just survive, but thrive.
One Out Of Three Capsules Full
Global Seed Vault has advanced so far from when it was first opened 10 years ago. The first year was greeted with deposits of over 300,000 different seeds and that number only grew from there.
Many different countries have contributed, including the U.S., Russia and even North Korea. The maximum capacity of the seed bank is 4.5 million varieties which means that they have almost filled one out of three of the chambers they have for storage.
Seed Capsules Are Only Opened Twice A Year
At this time, 73 different institutions have deposited crops to the seed vault. The vault is only opened twice a year to make these deposits. The most recent addition includes new varieties of rice, wheat and maize.
Seed Banks Are Important
The existence of such an extensive collection of our life on this planet is a no-brainer. We should all collectively make an effort to preserve the sources of our food.
You do question this when the biggest funding sources are biotech giants like Monsanto, Syngenta, etc.
No matter what we might wonder about ethics, any and all secrets this seed vault contains will remain deep under the Arctic ground for now.
Hopefully the vault will continue to do it's job of keeping the stored seeds safe. That is best for humanity.

Smells fishy to me. Who controls it?
It's not much use to us if it is controlled by the same people wanting us to eat their GMOs.
They could be doing some seriously disgusting nazi scientist style experiments down beneath the Arctic ice.
But like I said, for now whatever is down there will stay there...
