Internet usage policy

This Internet Usage Policy applies to all employees and students of GIFT University who have access to computers and the Internet. Use of the Internet by employees and students of GIFT University is permitted and encouraged where such use supports the goals and objectives of the study. However, access to the Internet through GIFT University is a privilege and all employees and students must adhere to the policies concerning Computer, Email and Internet usage. Violation of these policies could result in disciplinary and/or legal action. Employees and students may also be held personally liable for damages caused by any violations of this policy. All employees and students are required to abide by the rules hereunder.
Computer, email and internet usage

  1. Employees and students are expected to use the Internet responsibly and productively.
  2. Internet access is limited to study related activities only and personal use is not permitted
  3. Study related activities include research and educational tasks that may be found via the Internet
  4. All Internet data that is composed, transmitted and/or received by GIFT University’s Internet system, is considered to belong to GIFT University and is recognized as part of its official data. It is therefore subject to disclosure for legal reasons or to other appropriate third parties
  5. The equipment, services and technology used to access the Internet are the property of GIFT University and the University reserves the rights to monitor Internet traffic and monitor and access data that is composed, sent or received through its online connections
  6. Emails sent via the University email system should not contain content that is deemed to be offensive. This includes, though is not restricted to, the use of vulgar or harassing language and/or images
  7. All sites and downloads may be monitored and/or blocked by GIFT University if they are deemed to be harmful and/or not productive to business
  8. The installation of software such as instant messaging, p2p clients and torrents technology is strictly prohibited

Unacceptable use of the internet by employees and students includes, but is not limited to:

  1. Access to sites that contain obscene, hateful, pornographic, unlawful, violent or otherwise illegal material
  2. Sending or posting discriminatory, harassing, or threatening messages or images on the Internet or via University’s email service
  3. Using computers to perpetrate any form of fraud, and/or software, film or music piracy
  4. Stealing, using, or disclosing someone else's password without authorization
  5. Downloading, copying or pirating software and electronic files that are copyrighted or without authorization
  6. Sharing confidential material, trade secrets, or proprietary information outside of the organization
  7. Hacking into unauthorized websites
  8. Sending or posting information that is defamatory to the University, its services, colleagues and/or students
  9. Introducing malicious software onto the University’s network and/or jeopardizing the security of the organization's electronic communications systems
  10. Sending or posting chain letters, solicitations, or advertisements not related to business purposes or activities
  11. Passing off personal views as representing those of the organization
    If an employee or student is unsure about what constituted acceptable Internet usage, then he/she should ask his/her supervisor for further guidance and clarification.

IT CLEARANCE PROCESS

IT Clearance means to ensure the following
• Delete email account
• Delete domain account
• Ensure Handover/Takeover of Inventory
• A person who is on study leave his/her domain account is deleted but email account is not unless any higher authority gives consent
• Only email accounts that are not by name but by designation like [email protected], [email protected] will not be deleted

  • Hand over and takeover of data is the sole responsibility of the supervisor/HOD/replacement

All data is deleted along with the accounts and that is not recoverable. Kindly take your data and transfer important emails to your personal email accounts before getting clearance.
Important data should not be in the custody of just one person. It should be shared with supervisor or even before clearance supervisor should take important data from him/her and so as the emails.
Hand over and take over process should be immediately executed by supervisor/HOD as a person notifies about his/her departure.
At the time of clearance, all issued equipment should be returned to IT department. This enables us to achieve the following
• Cleared up all data
• Fresh Installation of Operating System
• Software/Hardware check
• System Clean up/Blower

  • IT Department will not be responsible of any data loss. All data should be carried before clearance

  • IT Department reserves the rights to make any changes in the policy with or without any intimation

    There are total five highly sophisticated labs and their detail is as follow

    • GIFT University IT Department provides the high speed Gigabit LAN infrastructure.

    • Around 100 high speed computers are provided to all faculty and management staff.

  8. Domain Login Facility
    • Domain username and passwords to all employees and students to log on to workstations.

  9. Data Storage Facility
    • Free data storage for all employees and students (1GB for employees and 512 MB for students).

  10. Internet Facility
    • Fast speed of 18 Mbps Internet for net surfing and achieve study related tasks.

  11. Email Facility
    • mail.gift.edu.pk is designed to address the e-mailing needs of employees and students.
    • It provides secure email storage, virus-and-spam scanned message delivery, calendar and mailing list services employees and students.

  12. Printing Facility
    • Laser printing up to 1200DPI at the speed of 32PPM.

  13. Scanning Facility
    • Quality scanning up to 1200DPI, 48bit at the speed of less than 10 seconds.

  14. Sharing Facility (Teaching Material, IT Docs & Software)
    • Staff and students can download software directly to their PC, laptop or Apple using shared serve facility provides by IT Department. Teachers can also share study related material with students through this facility.

  15. Digital Library Facility
    • dlib.gift.edu.pk is an intranet facility of Digital Library. It is a huge repository of electronic books. It contains almost 18,000 books from major international publishers in PDF format.

  16. Wi-Fi Facility
    • Fast Internet access on portable media such as Mobiles, PDAs and Laptops.

  17. Backup Facility
    • Redundant backup facility using latest RAID Servers and NAS for the protection of user data

  18. Online registration
    • times.gift.edu.pk is a web portal design for students online course registration

  19. Online course material
    • courses.gift.edu.pk is a web portal design for teachers to share course material and class progress with higher management

  20. Online IT Complaint System
    • itcomplaints.gift.edu.pk is a web application available on intranet to register IT related complaints and keep track of them

  21. Online Services Complaint System
    • services.gift.edu.pk is a web application available on intranet to register all general maintenance complaints

  22. Online Admission System
    • admission.gift.edu.pk is a web application used for recording admission related information

  23. Online Testing Facility
    • gcat.gift.edu.pk is a web application available on intranet for computer based entry test

  24. Central Database Facility
    • Following are the modules included in central database o GIFT Accounting System o GIFT Payroll System o GIFT Asset Management System o GIFT Attendance System o GIFT Education System o GIFT Examination System o GIFT Transportation System

  25. IT Help Desk Facility
    • IT Help desk provides all kind of help services related to IT from 8 to 4 PM

  26. Security Cam Facility
    • 56 Security Cameras has been fixed all over the campus including computer labs for security purposes

  27. Test Server Facility
    • Separate test servers are provided to CS students for their practical hands on experience in the actual work environment

  28. Multimedia and Sound System Facility
    • High quality digital multimedia projectors with wireless sound system has been fixed in all lecture theaters, labs and seminar hall

  1. Biometric Attendance Facility
    • GIFT University IT Department has provided biometric attendance system that uses radio frequency based electronic ID Cards and thumb impression to mark an employee’s arrival or departure
  2. IT Support Facility
    • IT Support Department provides help to students and faculty members to solve their IT related issues
  3. Laptop Facility
    • Laptops have been provided to key position holder employees in faculty and management
  4. Research Center Facility
    • A research center has been established at GIFT with the help of LUMS. This facility provides online access to various journals and research related facilities via VPN

LAB USAGE POLICY

  1. Unattended computer login for more than 5 minutes is not allowed
  2. Account lending to fellow student is not allowed
  3. Online proxy bypassing is not allowed
  4. Personal electronic equipment such as laptops, printers, PDAs, IPODs, play stations etc is not allowed
  5. Usage of cell phone is strictly prohibited
  6. All kind of foods and drinks including bubble gums, pan masalas etc are not allowed
  7. Any kind of game, chat and irrelevant usage to academics is strictly prohibited
  8. Mass emailing to any group, other than related to students, is strictly prohibited
  9. Group discussion and noisy behavior is not allowed
  10. In case of unavailability of seats please clear the area immediately

IT Department

  • IT Department reserves the rights to make any changes in the policy with or without any intimation

Storage Policy

  1. Every student will be given 300-512 MB of disk space on server as Z rive
  2. Every faculty and management employee who is given a domain user will be provided with 8001024 MB of disk space on server as Z drive
  3. Faculty members are provided with an additional space on server to share teaching material with students. Currently there is no space limit. A proper intimation will be sent before applying any limit.
  4. Faculty members should coordinate with library and PDF books should be placed in digital library. This will also make the digital library resource more useful.
  5. Snaps, movies or any other digital media about an event will be placed on any shared medium for two weeks only.
  6. All users should take backup of their data before the end of the semester as all data will be flushed out after proper intimation at the end of every semester
