Facebook Bars Australian Users, Publishers from Sharing All News Content
The dramatic move comes in reaction to a proposed law that would force tech giants to pay publishers for news content.
FACEBOOK WILL BAR ALL users and publishers in Australia from sharing links to news content in an extraordinary move that comes in response to a proposed law that would require tech giants to pay media companies for using their content.
The measure, which is expected to have enough support to pass the country’s legislature, also targets Google. Lawmakers have said they would avoid passing the law if Google and Facebook were able to make deals with publishers on their own.
Facebook will also bar all users around the globe from sharing content from Australian publishers.

Facebook said in a statement Wednesday that it has taken a different approach than Google because the two platforms have dramatically different relationships with news content and producers.
“The proposed law fundamentally misunderstands the relationship between our platform and publishers who use it to share news content,” William Easton, the managing director of Facebook in Australia & New Zealand, said in the statement. “It has left us facing a stark choice: attempt to comply with a law that ignores the realities of this relationship, or stop allowing news content on our services in Australia. With a heavy heart, we are choosing the latter.”
Easton said that Facebook, unlike Google, stands to gain little from a business perspective from news content.
Facebook’s move foreshadows what will likely happen should other countries propose similar laws.
