House Speaker Nancy Pelosi of California released a statement that the breach at the Capitol by pro-Trump supporters won't deter lawmakers from fulfilling thier duty to formalize Biden's victory and that they will work to complete the process they had started around 1 p.m. It remains unclear how long the session will last and if a handful of Republicans plan to follow through with their objections to state results. Politico reported that Congress plans to return around 8 p.m.

"Today, a shameful assault was made on our democracy. It was anointed at the highest level of government. It cannot, however, deter us from our responsibility to validate the election of Joe Biden," Pelosi said in a letter to all lawmakers. "We have decided we should proceed tonight at the Capitol once it is cleared for use."

Congress was in the midst of a two-hour debate on objections to Arizona's election results when protesters broke police lines, breached barriers around the complex and forced their way into the building. Lawmakers, staffers and reporters on the Hill were told to shelter in place as they tried to evacuate as many as they could, including Vice President Mike Pence, who was presiding over the joint session.

Prior to the frenzy, Republicans had been planning to object to at least several other battleground state results like Georgia and Pennsylvania, though they were going to try for a few more. It takes at least one House member and one senator to submit a written objection to state results, which then adjourns the joint session of Congress. Both chambers then separately debate the objection for two hours and reconvene after taking a vote, which will likely uphold Biden's victories.

Pence, who was presiding over both the joint session and Senate debate earlier Wednesday, had been tasked with calling each state alphabetically to review the certified results. But if Pence doesn't return to the Capitol for the remainder of the process, Sen. Chuck Grassley of Iowa, president pro tempore of the Senate, would instead take over as presiding officer.

As the Capitol remained in lockdown all through Wednesday afternoon, a growing number of lawmakers on both sides of the aisle appeared eager to resume Congress and not have violent protests interrupt Congress' duty to formalize the November presidential election.

The biggest question going into the night is whether Republicans press on with their objections or if they conclude their Trump-aligned efforts with only a single challenge to Arizona's results. Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers, Washington state Republican, announced ahead of the session that she no longer planned to support objections to the election results. Pelosi's statement also signaled that efforts to object to the vote could be shortened going forward.

"The night may still be long but we are hopeful for a shorter agenda, but our purpose will be accomplished," Pelosi said in her statement.
