If I remember correctly, China has said in the past year that if they are affected by a US nuclear strike on North Korea in any way, they will retaliate.
China is definitely playing both sides. NK is their mad dog proxy, whose existence more or less allows China to reap the benefits of a nuclear conflict with the US while answering for almost none of it, as they publicly call for peace. In the meantime, they ready themselves for an even more dominant position in the region.
The South China Sea has been a huge point of conflict between these nations, and it will probably be the area of flash point that starts this nuclear war.

While appearing neutral, I believe they have their own best interest in mind
