Coronavirus: Chloroqiune update

**WARNING: Do not self-medicate with Chloroquine!!**
This is just an update to my last post on the use of an old malaria medication - chloroquine - to control the virus.
Firstly, I want to point out that I am documenting these things because people in South Africa where I live are not being told. If we were told, panic and irrational panicking behaviour will subside. But we are still being fed bad and incomplete information. The perception is that SARS-CoV-2 is almost a death sentence. It's not. More reports and signs are coming in from around the world that indicate the success of chloroquine in treating SARS-CoV-2 infection. (commonly referred to as 'coronavirus')
China has gone from 60 000+ active infections to less than 10 000.
Recently, Wang and colleagues (Wang et al., 2020) evaluated in vitro five FDA-approved drugs and two broad spectrum antivirals against a clinical isolate of SARS-CoV-2. One of their conclusions was that "chloroquine (is) highly effective in the control of 2019-nCoV infection in vitro" and that its "safety track record suggests that it should be assessed in human patients suffering from the novel coronavirus disease". At least 16 different trials for SARS-CoV-2 already registered in the Chinese Clinical Trial Registry which propose to use chloroquine or hydroxychloroquine in the treatment of COVID-19.
In a recent publication (Gao et al., 2020), Gao and colleagues indicate that, "according to the news briefing", "results from more than 100 patients have demonstrated that chloroquine phosphate is superior to the control treatment in inhibiting the exacerbation of pneumonia, improving lung imaging findings, promoting a virus negative conversion, and shortening the disease course".
This would represent the first successful use of chloroquine in humans for the treatment of an acute viral disease, and is undoubtedly excellent news, since this drug is cheap and widely available.
UK bans export of another SARS-Cov-2 treatment
"The UK has banned the export of chloroquine, hydroxychloroquine, and Kaletra (an HIV drug). The export of the US-based AbbVie’s Kaletra / Aluvia, a combination lopinavir and ritonavir, the generic drug chloroquine phosphate and the generic drug hydroxychloroquine is being restricted to meet the needs of UK patients, the government said."
"Hydroxychloroquine was placed on the restricted list from 14 March and Kaletra and chloroquine phosphate were added on 26 February."
The Aussies win! (NOT-lol)
The Chronical from Australia is feverishly reporting “'CURE' found for coronavirus in Australia”! - Even though Prof Didier Raoult has been speaking about the success of the chloroquine trials in China since January.
“University of Queensland Centre for Clinical Research director Professor David Paterson told news.com.au today they have seen two drugs used to treat other conditions can wipe out the virus in test tubes.
"He said one of the medications, given to some of the first people to test positive for COVID-19 in Australia, had already resulted in 'disappearance of the virus' and complete recovery from the infection.”
“One of the two medications is a HIV drug, which has been superseded by newer generation HIV drugs, and the other is an anti-malaria drug called chloroquine which is rarely used and kept on the shelf now due to resistance to malaria."
The Australians seems to have done what other countries have done with success - because it works. Reports so far indicate the most widely used treatments was chloroquine, hydroxychloroquine, and Kaletra, and some have also combined Kaletra with chloroquine. But there are plenty of existing drugs now in trials
The Australians are now going to trial Chloroquine on it own, Kaletra on its own, and a combination of Chloroquine and Kaletra.
The Aussie headline is of course wrong: it’s not a “cure” - a word I deliberately tried to avoid - like with pretty much all treatments we use against viruses, it either stops the virus from replicating, stops it from entering cells, or otherwise interferes with the mechanism the virus would normally use to replicate. So you still get sick (if you fall in the group of people who do) but you then start treatment and it gives your body a fighting chance - your illness doesn’t get as severe as it otherwise could, and recovery is faster.
