And yet anytime the public has a problem they say "The government should do X". The government is good at two things: waste, and fear.

Corruption is a human condition. I think it over time infects pretty much any organization. Many organizations stat true to their original mission and ideals until their founder dies. After that all bets are off.
I think that has a lot to do with the people volunteering to take on jobs and positions often want power, so they volunteer to do things that the rest of us would rather not do. This kind has a power seekers rise to the top trend. This is my hypothesis anyway. :) (could be wrong)
but, you are correct... governments are good at those things. Perhaps better than other organizations.
