The election dates for Prime Minister Narendra Modi's home state, Gujarat will be announced by the Election Commission today, preventing the government from announcing more sops for the state where the BJP is trying to get a record fifth straight term in power. Wednesday's announcement comes 13 days after voting date for the hill state of Himachal Pradesh was declared earlier this month, prompting the opposition Congress to accuse the poll body of giving the ruling BJP a grace period to make last-minute announcements and launch massive projects to influence voters, a charge the powerful poll body had rebutted.
