Zarif: Iran ready to negotiate with US if approach to nuclear deal changed
Iran is open to talks with the US if Trump administration changes approach to the nuclear deal it pulled out of earlier this year, Iranian Foreign Minister, Mohammad Javad Zarif said.
In an interview with USA TODAY, the top Iranian diplomat said that his government would consider diplomacy if there were "foundations for a fruitful dialogue" on the Iran nuclear reduction deal.
"Mutual trust is not a requirement to start negotiations – mutual respect is a requirement," Zarif said.
In May, president Donald Trump officially announced that the US pulled out of the pact made with world powers and Iran. However, other signatories stayed in.
In August, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani expressed willingness to meet with President Trump to discuss the collapsing deal, but questioning – at the same time, Trump's "sincerity" in any theoretical talks.
"This administration does not believe in diplomacy. This administration believes in imposition", Zarif commented.
Trump's administration accuses Iran of carrying on its nuclear program and missile activity, spending billions of dollars on funding terrorism and sowing discord in the Middle East, particularly Syria and Yemen.
No response has yet been made by the White House on Zarif's remarks.
Recently, the US has delivered a new batch of sanctions against Iran which included 700 Iranian banks, companies and individuals
