US Treasury imposes fresh sanctions against financiers of Iran's IRGC

BEIRUT, LEBANON (8:50 P.M.) - While the world focuses on the investigation of Jamal Khashoggi's disappearance in Istanbul, the U.S. Treasury set their sights on Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and their regional activity.

According to a recent statement from the U.S. Treasury, they have decided to sanction more than 20 businessmen from the Bonyad Taavon Basij, as they provide a great deal of funding to the IRGC's Basij Resistance Forces.

"The international community must understand that business entanglements with the Bonyad Taavon Basij network and IRGC front companies have real world humanitarian consequences," said Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin.

The Basij Forces were recently deployed to Syria, where they helped take part in the battle against the Islamic State (ISIS/ISIL/IS/Daesh) in the Deir Ezzor province.
