How Steve Bannon and a Chinese Billionaire Created a Right-Wing Coronavirus Media Sensation

in #news4 years ago (edited)

Dr. Li-Meng Yan wanted his name kept secret. It was in mid-January that Yan, a researcher in Hong Kong, heard rumors of a new dangerous virus in mainland China that the government was playing down. Fearing for her safety at work and at work, she contacted her favorite Chinese guest on YouTube, a popular critic of the Chinese government.

Within days, the host was telling 100,000 of his supporters that the coronavirus had been deliberately released by the Communist Party of China. We will not name the informant, he said, because officers can make the person "disappear".

In September, Yan left with caution. It appeared on US Fox News, claiming millions of claims that coronavirus is a bioweapon produced by China.

At night, Yan became a sensation in the right-wing media, with senior advisers to President Donald Trump and conservative experts praising her for being a hero. As soon as possible, her interview was marked on social media with “false information,” while scientists rejected her research as a confusing situation dressed in jargon.

Its transformation has been the product of a collaborative effort between two different but growing groups of merchants who trade in misinformation: a small but active part of the Chinese diaspora and a major influence in the United States.

Each saw an opportunity in the disaster to push its agenda. The diaspora, Yan and her baseless claims have given a damn to those who want to bring down the Chinese government. Conservatives in the United States, however, have played a role in raising anti-China sentiment and distracting the Trump administration from cracking down on the crackdown.

Both sides have taken advantage of the scarcity of information coming out of China, where the government has refused to share the virus lab and has prevented a transparent and independent investigation. Her initial coverage of the outbreak has further fueled suspicions about the origin of the virus.
