LAURYN HILL: 'MORE POWERFUL THAN TWO CLEOPATRAS.'
Lauryn. Where do I start? This women came from the trenches of Newark, New Jersey (home of the 1967 riots and my hometown).
The only women not ONLY in a predominately male dominated group, but in an entire rap industry too, at the time her star rose to fame. In my book, the only female to slay and bless the mic through her powerful thought provoking poetry and voice. Lauren broke away from the luxurious and conventional way of life and wrote an entire album about it called 'Unplugged.' Two of my favorites are 'War in The Mind' and 'Mystery of Inequity'. Both of these songs touch on a plethora of controversial topics no musical artists, wanted to shed light on out of fear of being black listed and booted from the industry. Nothing rings more truth then all the struggles John Lenon, Nina Simone, and Billie Holiday faced after they 'Unplugged.’

After the five time Grammy artist, was hit with tax evasion, where she served a 3 month sentence in a state prison in New Jersey.
Lauryn has responded "America's systemic racism for exacerbating her problems. "Why would a system, 'well intentioned', wait until breakdown or incarceration to consider rehabilitation, after generations of institutionally inflicted trauma and abuse on a people?"

And, last but not least my favorite song … ‘I Get Out.’ Lauryn, is no longer in prison physically or spiritually. As to whether or not her musical career or rather her musical journey will thrive, only time will tell.

Meticulously dissects the various crisis society has been through over the past decades and examines how the crisis are manufactured to garner support for profit, power, and sustain the system. In her new book she mentions "This is one attempt to uncover how we got to this surreal political moment. It is also an attempt to predict how, under cover of shocks and crises, it could get a lot worse."

Redefines how beauty resides in resilience. Society's collective perception of what being beautiful means. This is a an amputee, who graced the covers of countless magazines, until she suffered from Toxic Shock Syndrome. She now has been embraced again and breaking the conventions of what being beautiful is. She has been featured in ad campaigns for Kenneth Cole and plastered all over the subways of NYC.
She is suing the manufacturers of the femenine hygiene product and has to spoken to congress on Toxic Shock Syndrome. Additionally, these products have toxins when used over extended amounts of time can seep into the blood stream and lead to devastating effects and in most cases even death. Styrene is a chemical found in tampons, which can lead to cancer. Lauren, has voiced to congress why is this being sold to countless women and no information to the actual cause of Toxic Shock Syndrome. Then venture over to “elements of the philosophy were enshrined as national policy by forced sterilization and segregation laws, as well as marriage restrictions, enacted in 27 states.”
