Gastroenteritis is an inflammation of the stomach and intestines caused by several types of bacteria and parasites, including salmonella, rotavirus, and norovirus bacteria that live in food and water.
Symptoms of this disease include nausea, diarrhea, abdominal cramps, fever, accompanied by severe continuous vomiting. Millions of children around the world die every year because of this disease.
This disease can be very dangerous to death because when the patient is vomiting or diarrhea, he is not able to consume or absorb drugs to treat the infection.
Patients who are considered vulnerable are young children and elderly people who are already weak.
From the results of clinical trials conducted by a number of European scientists, they found ginger can be used to relieve severe vomiting and ultimately help save the patient's life.
Dr Roberto Berni Canani, professor of pediatrics from the University of Naples, Italy who led the study, said he and his team have proven that in 141 children aged one to 10 years who were diagnosed with acute gastroenteritis.
There are two methods of treatment given to these children. There were children who were given a placebo supplement and some were given extra ginger.
Provision of this drug is given randomly.
The result, symptoms of vomiting decreased frequency as much as 20 percent in children who consumed ginger.
This has an impact on their attendance at school, because they no longer need to go to school because of illness.
"This means ginger has the potential to save lives around the world," said Canani in his presentation at the annual event of the European Society of Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition (ESPGHAN), as reported by The Independent on Thursday (10/05/2018).
Intestinal inflammation or gastroenteritis Globally, gastroenteritis has killed 1.34 million children annually.
This figure accounts for 15 percent of all child deaths.
"Acute gastroenteritis is still one of the biggest causes of death among children living in developing countries, and dehydration is the most common and dangerous complication," Canani said.
One way to fight it is to give rehydration drinks like ginger, to reduce the frequency of vomiting.
Ginger is known to have anti-inflammatory properties and perhaps this is what produces antiemetic effects.
To note, gastroenteritis causes 87,000 children in the UK to enter the hospital each year and another 700,000 underwent outpatient treatment.
