Hurting oneself

A few years ago I heard a story that has had a big influence on my life.

Unfortunately I can not remember who wrote it or some of the details of the story. So I will attempt to tell the story but with my own twist to it.

One evening a young man was driving home from work when he was hit head on and killed by a drunk driver.

The young man found himself standing in the middle of a beautiful field. Looking around all he saw was fields fields as far as the eye can see. Perplexed he started to call out in hopes of hearing a voice any voice but there was just silence.

Confused about what happened and where he was. Again he cried out "HELLO" just then he heard a voice behind him say "hello my child".

Spinning around he found himself face to face with God Himself.

God said "fear not dear child for this is not the end"
Young man: am I dead?
God: Yes, you were killed by a drunk driver who was drinking because he found his wife in bed with his best friend.
Young man: well then is this heaven?
God: no
Young man: well is there a heaven?
God: yes
Young man: are my parents there?
God: no
Young man: are they in hell?
God: no

Scratching his head the young man looks at God with an obvious question mark written across his face.

God knowing what the young man was going to ask said "there is no one in heaven and there is no one in hell".

You see my dear child, said God in the most kind and loving voice.
I have created millions upon millions of bodies but only one soul.

The young man took a staggering step back and puzzled over what he just heard.

You see you have been the only soul to walk my Earth. That drunk driver that hit you, his wife and his best friend that is all you.
You have died millions of times and we have this very same conversation each and every time you come here.
I send you back as someone different each time in hopes you will learn someday.
Confused the young man asked "learn what?"
God said: Learn love and kindness. You see when you hurt someone you hurt yourself. When you help someone you help yourself. When you love someone you love yourself. Last week when you helped that elderly lady up when she fell you helped yourself. Every time you come here you learn a little more.

Now it's time for you to go back. This time you will be a little girl in a poor country in the year 1548. Please remember our talk and learn to be kind to yourself.

The moral of the story is what you do to others you do to yourself.
