Harper Lee is born (1926)

Harper Lee being her pen name, with her real name being Nelle Harper Lee, was born on this date in 1926 in Monroeville, Alabama. She is most known for being a novelist.

You may not know her just from her name, but if you are even remotely familiar with literature, you should be familiar with her book, To Kill a Mockingbird. She published the book in 1960. Hard to believe, it was her only published book.

In July 2015, Go Set a Watchman was published as a sequel, but it was actually determined to be a first draft of her aforementioned book.

In 1961, she received a Pulitzer Prize for To Kill a Mockingbird and in 2007 was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom for her contribution in literature. She passed away in February of 2016.

Treaty of San Francisco goes into effect (1952)

On this date in 1952, the Treaty of San Francisco, also known as the Treaty of Peace with Japan, went into effect. On September 8, 1951, it was signed by 48 nations and officially ended the American-led Allied Occupation of Japan.

It served to end Japan’s position as an imperial power. It also allocated compensation to Allied civilians and former POWs who suffered Japanese war rimes during World War ll. It also returned sovereignty to Japan.

The treaty also gave compensation to other nations, such as Burma, the Philippines, Indonesia and Vietnam.

Pink Floyd’s “The Dark Side of the Moon” reaches #1 on the U.S. charts (1973)

The Dark Side of the Moon, the 8th album by the English rock band Pink Floyd, was released on March 1st, 1973. It explored themes of conflict, greed, the passage of time and also mental illness. It was recorded at Abbey Road in London.

The album was a huge commercial and critical success. It topped the Billboard Top LPs & Tapes chart for a week and remained in the chart for 741 weeks from 1973 to 1988.

It has an estimated 45 million copies sold. It is their most successful album and one of the best-selling world wide. It is often ranked as one of the greatest albums of all time.
