The researchers brought the good news. They report having found a town lost since more than 2,000 years ago. Named Qalatga Darband, an ancient city overlooking the river in Sulaimaniya, Kurdistan, Iraq, it still has remnants of a fortified ancient settlement.

Qalatga Darband was founded in the era of Alexander the Great. The researchers estimate the construction of Qalatga Darband was completed after Alexander the Great defeated King Persia Darius III in Mesopotamia.

In Kurdish, Qalatga Darband means "a castle that crosses a mountain." He was once a vintage wine-trafficking venue.

"These are the early days, but we think this city was once a bustling city on the journey from Iraq to Iran You can imagine people supplying wine to passing soldiers," archaeologist John MacGinnis of the British Museum told The Times.

The researchers also used satellite photography results taken by the United States government in the 1960s during the Cold War. Photos of the Corona program have been declassified in the 1990s and used to identify the remains of relics.

"Unmanned aircraft produces good information. Analyzing crop markings has never been done in Mesopotamian archeology. If there is a wall under the ground, wheat and barley will not grow well, so there is a color difference in plant growth, "MacGinnis said as quoted by Science Alert on Tuesday (26/09/2017).

Field investigations have found the foundations of large buildings, including reinforced walls and stone presses that may be used in wine or oil production. In addition, the researchers also found tiles and statues that are thought to depict Persephone and Adonis figures.
