Today May 17 : International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia

in #new6 years ago

The theme of 2018 is : the right of LGBT people in the world.

The International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia takes place every year on May 17th. A symbolic date for the importance it represents in the evolution of the homosexual condition. On May 17, 1990, the World Health Organization removed homosexuality from the list of mental illnesses, ending more than a century of medical homophobia. An international day of awareness and education and raise awareness of the devastating effects of these discriminations. The campaign highlights the realities of LGBT lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people in the world. Homophobia and transphobia have important, sometimes devastating, consequences for the lives of those who are victims.

Homophobia manifests itself in different forms. She is sometimes conscious, sometimes unconscious. Any negative attitudes that may lead to rejection and discrimination, direct or indirect, against gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and transgender people, or against anyone whose appearance or behavior does not conform to stereotypes of masculinity or femininity. Are considered variants of homophobia:

There is no one safe from hostile manifestations of this style, heterosexual people who do not fully conform to the stereotypes of masculinity or femininity may face homophobia or transphobia. Homophobia and transphobia have important, sometimes devastating, consequences for the lives of victims who have great difficulty accepting or living with a different sexual orientation or gender identity than the majority. The suicide rate among gay youth is much higher than among heterosexuals, many still live in secrecy and fear of rejection. Trans people are still living in a marginal situation and are even more vulnerable to suicide.

On the international stage as part of the 2018 campaign: "In my country, it's still a crime to display its colors", which deals with LGBT rights. 72 states still criminalize homosexuality and 8 of them punish it with the death penalty. Governments need to take a more proactive approach to tackling homophobia and transphobia around the world. There is still work to be done to change things. It is essential to support LGBT rights groups, there is still a long way to go before achieving social equality among all citizens on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity.

The solution: Awareness and education @AnarchoPirate
