Netflix was founded on August 29, 1997, in Scotts Valley, California, by Marc Randolph and Reed Hastings. Randolph worked as marketing director for Hastings' company, Pure Atria. Randolph was a co-founder of MicroWarehouse, a computer mail order company, and was later employed by Borland International as vice president of marketing. Hastings, a computer scientist and mathematician, sold Pure Atria's headquarters in Sunnyvale while waiting for government regulators to approve the merger, although Hasting has given several different explanations for how the idea was created.

Netflix introduced the monthly subscription concept in September 1999, and then dropped the single-rental model in early 2000. Since that time, the company has built its reputation on the business model of flat-free unlimited rentals without due dates, late fees, shipping and handling fees, of per-title rental fees.

Netflix has been one of the most successful dot-com ventures. In September 2002, The New York Times reported that, at the time, Netflix mailed about 190,000 discs per day to its 670,000 monthly subscribers. The company's published subscriber count increased from one million in the forth quarter of 2002 to around 5.6 million at the end of the third quarter of 2006., to 14 million in March 2010.

Netflix moved into streaming in 2007.
The company announces a move into original programming with ''House of Cards,'' a series about Washington intrigue produced by David Fincher and Kevin Spacey. It premiered in 2013, although ''House of Cards'' isn't the first original show to debut on the service.

The first season of ''House of Cards'' premiered February 1, 2013. Netflix has invested $100 million for two 13- episode seasons -- a huge risk -- but eventually the first season earned eight Emmy nominations and greatly increased Netflix's invisibility.
