Expect the unexpected: The dark nights will soon be gone.

We, belonging to different countries have different lifestyles and different problems to deal with. Here, I am giving you an insight into the major problem Nepalese people have been facing and what’s going to change soon.

Nepal, despite being very rich in water resources has yet not been able to generate the electricity as per its capacity. There are many villages in Nepal where electricity has yet not been reachable and so people are surviving depending on the candle lights and “tukki” (oil lamps). Most of the districts, except a few have always faced and are still facing the problem of load shedding. Including the capital, this problem prevails in most of the districts. Kathmandu, the capital city of Nepal is more developed than any other districts in terms of almost anything but load shedding. Here, we have load shedding starting with 1 hour and reaching up to 24 hours, this resulting postponing and halting a lot of works. More than 10 years of my life have gone through just worrying every single minute about electricity before doing any important stuff. The recent reach of load shedding in Kathmandu is 13 hours per day. You can already imagine how much of works can’t be done due to the power-cut for 13 big hours. However, in the governance of the new Prime Minister in our country lately, we have got the hopes of overcoming this problem. He has decided to make Kathmandu a load shedding free city. And that’s like the best thing that can happen to we people. Now, that the fear will soon be gone, we won’t have much things to worry about. It has always hampered our daily lives, be it in the household works or official works. Little things will start changing now. Dad will not have to worry about the charge of his laptop being empty and not being able to charge and work for his office. Mom won’t have to worry about doing household works. She won’t have to worry about me coming home at night because it’s mostly dark at night and hence, dangerous. I won’t have to worry about saving this file every another second with a fear of this desktop shutting down anytime (Damn! It just happened). Grandparents won’t have to worry about pasting the printed schedule of load shedding on the wall every other week because even the schedule is unstable. This not being only in my family, but every single family here.

Here, children have always had to compromise with their studies. Back then in school days, every parent I knew made their children do their assignments as soon as they returned back from school because there would be power-cut in the evening and they would not be able to study properly in candle lights. Also, I remember us not being able to take single practical class in school because of excessive hours of power-cut and not being able to submit assignments on time. And this is also a major reason why bringing a practical approach to education system here just remains a myth. But now, the scenario is going to change somehow. The children will be able to read without the fear of power being cut at night. Schools won’t have to set that awkward time for any practical classes according to the schedule and again change that awkward time to another awkward time weekly. What our government has been doing is, setting a trend of decreasing the hours of load shedding during the boards of 10th grade. But while the boards of other grades are equally important as the 10th’s, this trend remains biased. There are much more problems I can’t even continue describing here.

While for some people out there, it might be funny or surprising or just nothing at all, for us, it’s a ray of new hopes. Starting with the capital, I hope this soon reaches every single district in Nepal and I hope not even a single family lives through the dark nights anymore. And I am not writing this just to show what problems we’ve been facing in our life, but also to make you realize that something you’ve not ever considered could be affecting someone else’s lives so much and also how much you might have been taking things for granted.
