Hello needleworkers, parents and supporters! Today we are announcing a fun needlework collaboration contest! The @NeedleWorkMonday community is partnering up with the @Steemitmamas! Are you ready?

We wanted to do a fun and simple project that would be easy for you to gather supplies (you may already have these on hand) and fun for you to do with your child! One of the goals of the needlework community is to inspire people to get crafting! We hope you will join us for this one!

String Art

String art is weaving colored string, wool, wire, or yarn between hammered nails to make geometric patterns. You’ll normally see these designs on a piece of wood or canvas. It is also referred to as pin-and-thread art. It started back in the 19th century by Mary Everest Boole who wanted to find a way to introduce mathematical ideals to children. Today you will find numerous ways of how this form of art is achieved.

To keep with our theme “needle”work your string art project entry must be accomplished with a needle. Whether you use card stock paper, poster board, cardboard, canvas etc., you must create your design with your choice of string by weaving it with a needle.

Two Categories of Winners

Although we are collaborating with the @Steemitmamas community we are aware that some needleworkers are not parents or some of your children may not be children any more! Vice versa some of our Steemitmamas have grown up children. With this in mind we will have two contest categories.

Category 1 - Parent/Child Project Entry

Category 2 - Individual Project Entry

Please mention somewhere in your post which category you are entering in! There will be three winners chosen from each category. The prizes are as follows:

🥇 - 10 SBI Shares

🥈 - 7 SBI Shares

🥉 - 4 SBI Shares

To learn more about SBI Shares (steembasicincome) please read @steembasicincome’s FAQ!

@Steemitmamas is sponsoring the prizes for the parent/child project entry and @NeedleWorkMonday is sponsoring the prizes for the individual project entry!

All parents and individuals are welcome to submit an entry. You do not have to be a member of either community to join in.

Rules and Instructions for Entry

1) Must use a needle when creating your string art.
2) Must show at least two process pictures with needle visible in one of the photos.
3) For parent/child project entry in addition to the two process photos, you must include one photo of your child working on project (if you wish not to show their face you can just show their hands working).
4) First two tags on your post must be #needleworkmonday and #steemitmamas.
5) Entries are due in two weeks by Monday May 13th!
6) Must post entry link in the comment section below on this post.

We will be judging qualified posts based on effort, creativity and presentation! Posts that do not follow all the rules and instructions will be disqualified. Please make sure to read over them carefully.

We want you to get creative as possible so we are giving plenty of time to gather supplies, come up with a design and to work with your child. Surprise us with your creativity and imagination! Maybe this will spark an interests to do more needle arts ;D

Example

Here is a project my daughter and I did this weekend to give you an idea of how achievable this is. Hopefully it gives you some inspiration on where to start. This is just one example of many ways you can do string art.

Materials used:

• card stock paper
• tapestry needle
• yarn
• googly eyes

1. Draw your design on card stock paper. I suggest you outline it with a gel pen or thin marker so that it shows better...

2. Use your tapestry needle to poke holes around your design...

3. Thread your yarn through your tapestry needle (make sure it’s long enough to cover your design) and begin by pulling it up through the back of the paper...

4. then up to the other side. Once there choose a hole to pull the needle down through (pull gently so your paper won’t bend and wrinkle)...

5. Repeat by pulling it up through the back...

6. then over and down again...

Soon it will start to look like this...

You don’t have to keep the lines uniform, you can criss cross and go in any direction. When all of the holes have been entered it looks like this...

My daughter decided to add googly eyes to ours. Here is the finished project...

It is so cute. You could have added the physics tag there is so much string theory involved :o)

Thank you!!! I just added the physics tag! I honestly didn’t think of adding that! Thanks so much!

Oh it is was more meant as a joke haha :P

Oops!! Haha!! 😂🤪 I took it literally lol!

Thank you @googlyeyes! 😃👀

added you to regularowl. Regularowl only follows specific accounts since I don't have anything fast enough to stream the whole blockchain

This is so cute! Great idea for a contest, should be fun to try!

Thank you! I hope it’s lots of fun for everyone!

I am always learning new things, as I never have heard about stringart. But this looks like fun technique which could be easily adapted to varying skill levels. I am looking forward to all the beautiful projects <3

Isn’t it great to learn about new techniques?! I’m looking forward to seeing them as well! 😊

¿puedo enviar dos entradas? una para cada categoría

¡Absolutamente! ¡No veo por qué no! ¡Solo asegúrese de mencionar en qué categoría está ingresando para cada entrada! 😉
