Simple machine sewed coasters - #NeedleworkMonday

I am the luckiest girl in the world.

A few years ago i was given a freebie old fashioned Singer sewing machine from a colleague clearing out their house. I used to play around on my mums machine when i was little but had no idea how to actually work it.

Thankfully my partners mum is a seamstress (and a good teacher) and she went through the basics with me, so i could load my thread and start sewing! I managed to get a few fat quarters from Aldi (they do the best random craft offers!) And started this wee project as practice.

I didnt measure precisely any hems or anything, but all i did to make these was:

  • cut material to desired size with an inch or so on all sides for sewing - for set of 6 cut 6 squares of 2 fabric choices
  • sew along three edges with right sides together
  • turn right side out using a knitting needle or similar to poke out corners
  • turn under last edge and sew shut
  • top stitch a border in contrasting colour if desired

A layer over felt etc could be popped between the fabric to make them a bit thicker but i didnt bother with mine!

I love the fabric pattern with the cute woodland animals :) i didnt photograph the backside but the fabric is brown with tiny white leaves, which pairs quite nicely.

Very cute! I love having a sewing machine too.

Crochet is my go to craft but i love knowing i can do it if i want to. When im off for more than a weekend i enjoy spending a day on the machine just practising :) ive saved loads of different fabrics to do stuff with when ive got the time!

I find the machine great for altering and repairing clothes. I dont really have patience for making clothes from scratch, but I do enjoy making curtains or pillows and easy stuff. I save fabrics too! Seems like we have lots in common!

Very nice coasters @kimbolo86! Isn't it a great feeling to be able to make your own items? I'm like you, crochet is my go to craft but I do know how to thread my Singer and hem and sew basic things. Thanks so much for posting this! I'm so excited about seeing different work! Upped and Steemed!

Thanks @crosheille. I just adore it. Every year ive crafted ive cut down on the number of gifts ive bought, because it feels so much nicer giving something handmade :) and its always good to be learning new things and keeping the mind working!

Absolutely! There's nothing like a gift handmade with love! It is definitely a good exercise for the brain ;) I have cut down on a lot of spending too. I crochet so much on my spare time that I almost always have a gift for every occasion :)

These are adorable! I am completely in love with those foxes!!! You did a great job.
