Safety Hats for Visibility

If you like to go running or walk the dog in the darkening evenings, it's time to get some bright and/or reflective yarn to make sure vehicles see you. I make my favorite simple ribbed hat in neon colors or in Red Heart Reflective yarn and give them to my active family members and friends. I also make them to order for sale sometimes. They are quick and easy, so they make a good charity knitting project, too.

I know how often I have seen a jogger just in time to avoid an accident, especially this time of year when people forget the days are getting shorter. If they all had these hats (or maybe even an entire hoodie of reflective yarn) I would have more time to slow down/react.

Keep your family safe with this simple hat, too:

Cast on about 64 stitches in heavy worsted or 2 strands of light worsted/DK using size 10 or 11 needles (U.S. sizes) Knit in K2P2 ribbing in the round (or knit flat and make a seam) When hat reaches about 8 inches in length, switch from K2P2 to K2tog, P2 for next row/round. Continue with K1, P2. When hat reaches about 9 inches, do next round K1, P2tog. Knit 2 more rows, rounds, then k2tog all around, cut yarn, thread end through remaining stitches, draw together, and fasten off. Hide ends and seam if you knit flat.

You can adjust the length by knitting longer before you do the first decrease. If you want a bigger or smaller hat, adjust the stitches by multiples of 4.

Although I don't know anything about needlework, the hats look like they took a lot of time to complete. And I love the colorful scarves you include in your promotional pages. With your busy schedule, I don't know where you find the time to produce such beautiful work.

I carry knitting with me everywhere, so it gets done in the bits of time that would otherwise go to waste.

Ohhhh brilliant idea! But doesn’t the yarn scratch a bit? I am not sure if you remember my fake brioche scarf from last year in this neon green. The yarn also had a reflective thread in it and I stopped knitting it, because it scratched on my neck when I tried it on.
Perhaps, I will unravel the scarf and use the yarn for a hat and sew some fabric inside (I love to run in the evening and you are right it’s so fast dark)

My kids have not complained, but they have thick hair. If I used the yarn for someone without much hair, I might just do some duplicate stitch on the surface in the reflective thread.

Hey @fiberfrau, here is a bit BEER for you. Enjoy it!

Attempt No. 4 - it seems the beer distributor is overwhelmed with work. Let's try again for a !BEER

There is thin reflective yarn which you can add to your normal yarn and which reflects the light of cars and street lamp. It's made with small glass pearls and you have to be more careful while knitting (or crocheting), but it works great. It's called Hatnut safe reflect and comes in different colors.
