It doesn't look that bad! I would not worry about a button panel for the front, and wear it like a vest or open jacket.

Thank you for helping me :-D I am now thinking of only putting one button on the top and then let it fall open... But as it is super hot here, all my decisions will wait; 40 degrees is to warm for me to knit 🥵🥵
