I compared 3 different types of pom pom makers available at local retail craft stores. Here are the results.

From left to right, the first is the Yarnology from Hobby Lobby available in a pack of 4 sizes. It is easy to use and makes uniform, fluffy poms.

Second is Loops and Threads from Michael's. It comes in a pack of 3 sizes and makes a decent pom, though it required some trimming.

Third place was the one-piece tool, also from Hobby Lobby. This one had barely adequate instructions and made a rather scruffy pom.

Your mileage may vary, so just use this as a guide. Let me know if you have opinions or insights to help me make the perfect pom pom.

I have no experience with small pom-poms, we made larger ones in my childhood and used two rings of paperboard as a sample. Those had to get cut open on the side when the pom-pom was ready.

Yes, I have made those as well. I was trying these out for times I need to make many of them and don't want to keep cutting out cardboard. I still use cardboard when I need a non-standard size.

I by no means am an expert... I do thank you for sharing your expertise! :)

The left one seems to be similar to the Clover pom pom makers which is the preferred one in my needlework group. I've got no experience with pom poms myself so can't give further information.

They have a hinge on one side to open and close. They also make it easy to tie the center really tight, which contributes to the uniform fluffiness.
