Fun Fact About The Washington Wizards
So when I was writing my last piece (which you can read here ---> https://steemit.com/nba/@wheresmyfitzy/yq5fj-today-in-nba-history-jordan-stockton-barkley-ewing-debut) I came across something I didn't know.
Back in November of 1995, the owner of the Washington Bullets was looking to change the team's name as he thought Bullets was to violent in lieu of the recent violence erupting in D.C. at the time.
The contest for new names was open to the public, and was narrowed down to: the Dragons, The Express, The Stallions, The Sea Dogs and The Wizards.
On May 15th, 1997, the Bullets were officially changed to the Wizards. Although there was controversy - apparently Wizard is a rank in the KKK - the name stuck, even though the uniforms and colors did not.
The original colors of the Wizards were blue, black and bronze...and looked awful, even when Gilbert "Agent Zero" carried the team and tried to make it look cool. The colors were eventually changed back to the red, white and blue as they originally were when they were the Bullets.
I had no problem with the Bullets - although in today's society I'm sure it would be a micro-aggression to everybody - but am glad that it was changed to the Wizards as opposed to the other choices. They just wouldn't sound right.
