The Amazing Palm Tree
Palm trees are amazing to me. Maybe because they are so different than any tree I have been around in my life. Three years ago this one was only about 3 feet tall and now it's between 7 and 8 feet tall, so it's grown over a foot per year.
As it grows the lowest leaf will eventually fall away leaving it's mark on the tree as a ring on the trunk. With any image here you can click the image and see it full size for more detail. Each successive ring is a little over an inch away from it's closest neighbor when first formed. Over time, the tree grows and the rings become wider and less prominent until near the bottom the rings have almost disappeared.
Palm trees grow from the center out, unlike the trees I am accustomed to with each limb growing in length. Each new leaf comes from the center of the tree. On this palm, the new leaf resembles a spear pointing straight up.
The 'spear' will continue growing until it's almost the length of the final new limb before opening up and taking its place with the other limbs.
Overall, to me this plant is growing into a beautiful tree with the beautiful green color and the streamers. It's not much for shade yet, for that I will have to wait a few more years.
