GUACAMAYA BLUE AND YELLOW

in #nature6 years ago

Hello dear Steemians, This post is dedicated to these beautiful birds called Guacamayas, especially the blue and yellow, since they exist red and others.

Scientific Name: Ara ararauna
Common Name: Blue and Yellow Macaw
Other Common Names: Blue and yellow macaw

Morphological description:

About 84 cm; up bright blue, down yellow on. Green forehead and crown; eye area and cheeks without feathers with thin lines of small black feathers around the eyes. Black throat, black beak.
I call them the mascots of the Caraqueños, since in the city of Caracas live many blue and yellow macaws, they visit the homes of many people in search of food, they arrive in groups to the balconies and the people feed them, they can repeat the routine every morning ... being part of the Caracas families that keep food for them.

Many recognize them, give them affection, take photos and even make them videos.

Habitat:

Near the rivers, swamps, savannas with scattered trees and palms, plains, gallery forest, rain forests, gardens and parks in the city of Caracas. From sea level to 500 m altitude. Those that live in the city of Caracas and in the Miranda state, since it is not their original distribution in our country. In these places they reach up to 900 m altitude.

Habits:

Diurnal, they eat fruit and seeds, which they consume in the treetops, although they can pick mango or palm fruits from the ground. They also eat insects, berries and flowers. The variety of fruits that they eat is quite broad, including toxic ones. To nullify the effects of the latter, they eat clay that they collect from the riverbanks. They live in pairs or groups of up to 25 members. They are gregarious and noisy birds, they usually walk in pairs or trios, which they keep for a lifetime. They spend long times of the day resting in the canopy of the trees or in palm trees. They can travel long distances between feeding areas and roosts. They are very associated with palm trees, which they use to feed, rest and nest.

Reproduction and Longevity:

It reproduces throughout the year. Makes large nests in dead palm trees, which reuse every year. Normally, the female lays 2 to 3 eggs, which she incubates for almost a month while the male feeds her. The chicks (usually only one) fly out of the nest about 90 days after hatching. Sexual maturity is reached after 2 to 4 years.

Particularities:

The pattern of yellow and blue coloration is unique among psittacines.

Distribution:

It is found in South America, from Panama to Peru, Bolivia and Paraguay. It extends slightly in Central America, where it is limited only to Panama. It is an endangered species in Trinidad and is about to be extirpated from Paraguay but is still widespread and is quite common in much of the continental territory of South America. There is also a breeding population in Miami-Dade County in Florida. Therefore it appears as of Minor Concern by BirdLife International. In the 15th century and probably until the end of the 19th century, its distribution area covered practically the entire Caribbean basin.

It is so much the affection of the Caraqueños to these birds, that on Instagram they created an account @guacamayasdeccs and also in the account @elnacionalweb publish many photographs. In that way I found out about a white and blue macaw ... they called her Blanquita since it is said she died last year.

I do not stop admiring the beauty of this bird, not only for its colors but for the social thing that it is.

Thank you very much for the support you have always received!
