Willow tree still alive and kicking

in #nature7 years ago

In our local park last year the council 'trimmed down 'some large beautiful trees, to comply with legal requirements against some people making claims against them, if it accidentally falls on them .

The felled trees were sawned off to manageable logs for disposal off site and stockpiled . As sometimes happens one gets overlooked and is still there next year.
This is the scene today
The logs have started sprouting shoots , with no visible signs off any roots

Another gem is that there appears the local bees / wasps have found an opening to build a bee/wasp nest inside one of these logs.

I love nature .

i didn't know trees could grow without roots?
where are they getting the nutrients and water ?

Interesting fact: Weeping Willow Trees contain a plant hormone that promotes rooting so they are easy to propagate. This natural rooting hormone is what causes the suckers to sprout so well, yet if not properly propagated and cared for they run the risk of dying due to climate, rotting, and other environmental factors.

thank you for the link
it just sounded weird that a plant can grow shoots without getting its nutrients from the ground

You are welcome. Plants and nature can be very diverse. Here in Argentina there are many 'parasitic' plants that grow everywhere without rooting - on other trees, on power lines, on walls and electrical poles.... It's amazing!

Nature can't be beat. Literally, She will far outlast any one of us. I love Her too.
