I love large leaves so this is one of my favorite plants. They thrive in tropical conditions where the plant can grow up to 8 feet tall, and the leaves can grow to an amazing 5 feet long and 3 feet wide. Elephant Ears are easy to grow and they are great for landscaping.
These elephant ears are growing in my neighbors yard next to his shed. The plants next to them with the red flowers are canna lilies and they have large leaves also, but nothing close to the size of the elephant ears.
Taro or coco yam are the common names for the root of this plant, and it is a food source for the people in Hawaii and other tropical regions. Do not eat any parts of this plant unless it is cooked properly or it will make you ill. In addition, the plants sap is a skin irritant.
This photo was taken 6 weeks prior to the first one. You can see how much they have grown in such a short period of time.
