shrimp-pistol : Definition
The term shrimp-pistol describes a shrimp of the Alpheidae family that produces a powerful sound. The Alpheidae are crustaceans.
The shrimp-pistols have a large forceps. The very noisy sound they emit makes it possible to stun or even kill prey or to remove predators.
Examples of shrimp-pistol
Alpheus heterochaelis
the cardoon large claws, a shrimp a few centimeters long and green. The noisy clip can be left or right, its size can reach nearly half the body. This shrimp lives in the western Atlantic Ocean. Researchers have studied how this shrimp could produce such a sound. They showed that the quick closing of the clamp led to the emission of a jet of water at high speed, creating a pressure difference at the origin of a bubble that implodes; it is the implosion of this low pressure bubble that creates noise of more than 200 dB. The water can exceed 4,000 ° C at this point.
Alpheus dentipes
shrimp-pistol with spiny legs, which carries a spine on the legs P3 and P4: this species present in the Mediterranean measures about 3 cm.
Synalpheus pinkfloydi
is a shrimp-pistol with a pink clip, hence its name inspired by Pink Floyd. This shrimp was found off the coast of Panama, in the Pacific.
