Gross!

in #nature7 years ago

There are not many things that make me want to gag, but this makes me gag whenever I'm near it.

That my friends is a bag of dead flies! In the last month we've had a major influx of flies here on the farm. Why that is the case is a mystery to me, but we needed to do something, if for nothing else just to get them off the dogs.

So 5 days ago we put up one of these fly bait bags, a simple bag filled with a litre of warm water and then a powdery bait added to the water. This then emits a smell that gets worse the longer it is in the sun and elements.
It works like a bomb. Once the flies are inside, the design stops them from exiting, so they die in the bag in their 1000's.
Do other countries have similar fly catches? It works amazingly, but with this 'plague' that has hit us here, the catcher hasn't had time to keep up (usually the flies die in the liquid, and then become part of the liquid until the bag is full. Now with the influx of flies coming so quickly, they are piling into the bag before they can decompose...it's stinky, it moves, and it's gross to the max!

Another picture of the bag.

So from the time I took the photos till today, the flies have come in serious numbers, and as of this moment, here is what it looks like now.

There must be 10000 flies in that thing.
So seriously, are we the only country that does this? Or is this used elsewhere in the world?

Sort:

I used something on My Plot that worked similarly, it was metal with a little tunnel they could get through but not out again! As I recall there was a piece of meat placed inside. Do you have a lot of Animals there? I used a spray designed for horses on , Sheep, Cattle and Dogs, worked well.

We dont have a lot on our property but there are a few around us, and an abattoir across the road.
You must please share that spray info though...that would help a lot

@towjam Well, your technique works. We here use a tube light for this purpose. A tube light which attracts files near to it. When flies touches the tube they burns due to electric power. So your technique is not modern. Try to use that one for reducing files.

hi there @thedaud we have those on the plot as well, and they are brilliant with little bugs like moths and mosquitoes, but not so good with flies unfortunately.

Thanks for advice however

Instead of Gross you could say 144?

144? OK you got me on this one.....what the heck is that. Is that the sound one makes when throwing up?
