The speed of these guys!

in #nature6 years ago

Orca are named due to their barrel-like shape, which Orcinus Orca translates to literally barrel-like in latin. Pretty cool, eh? Nothing is more evident of this shape and their ability to glide through the water than when they want to move quickly in less than smooth conditions.

The speed these animals can cover in rough ocean conditions is beyond impressive, which does make taking photos of them whilst they are in such a behaviour somewhat difficult/challenging. Who doesn't like a good challenge though? It does keep life interesting and forces you to push yourself out of the norm.

This pod we caught up to in the Gerlache Strait, as we were leaving the Antarctic Peninsula and making our way to the South Shetland Islands one more time during the fly-in cruises. Luckily enough we were only stuck in the South Shetlands for 2 days, as the weather conditions did not allow the planes to land in order to collect our outgoing guests. All is well that ends well, as they boarded and headed back to their real worlds and we continued to Ushuaia, Argentina. Now I am off for a few weeks to rest and remember what the warmth of the sun feels like in South America until heading back down for another month of adventure and experience
